Maytag washer shipping bolts left in the back panel are the first thing to check when the washer shows F7E1, a motor speed-sensing error: the control told the drive motor to reach a spin speed and did not get the feedback it expected. On a new installation the cause is often a pair of shipping bolts left in the back of the washer. On an older machine it is more often an overloaded drum, a worn drive belt or a motor or motor-control fault. Our Maytag washer F7E1 error page carries the reference listing; this guide gives you the order in which to check things.
What does F7E1 mean on a Maytag washer?
During the spin, the control commands the motor to accelerate to a target speed and watches a speed signal that tells it how fast the drum is turning. F7E1 means that signal did not match the command. The washer stops the cycle rather than keep forcing a spin it cannot confirm, which also protects the motor and drive parts from damage. The problem could be in the motor, in the sensor that reports its speed, in the wiring between them, in the belt that carries the motion or in something that is holding the drum back.
That last cause is the one most often missed. A drum that cannot turn freely, because of shipping bolts or an enormous soaked load, looks to the control exactly like a failing motor.
What symptoms do you see with F7E1?
The drum will not spin up to speed. You may notice strong vibration during the spin attempt, or the cycle may stop at the spin step with clothes still sopping wet. The code appears on the display and the washer will not progress. If the washer drains, fills and washes normally but the problem appears only at spin, that points to the drive and speed-sensing side rather than the water side. A washer that will not drain at all belongs with the F9E1 and DRN codes, which our Maytag washer F9E1 and DRN guide covers.

Were the shipping bolts removed?
If the washer is new, recently moved or newly installed, check this first. Front-load washers are shipped with transit bolts that lock the drum to the cabinet so it does not move on the truck. They must be removed before the first wash. They are in the back panel, usually three or four, with rubber or plastic spacers. If any remain, the drum cannot suspend and spin freely, and the motor struggles. After removing them, keep the bolts for any future move and cover the holes with the plugs that came with the washer. The installation sheet that came with the washer shows the exact positions.
Washers that have been working for years do not have this problem, so skip this step on an older machine unless it was recently moved.
How do you rule out the load?
Open the door, take out everything and look at the drum. A very large, wet or heavy load, such as a comforter, rugs or several towels, can bunch up and prevent the drum from reaching speed. Remove half of it, spread the rest out and put it back evenly. Run a spin-only cycle and listen. If the washer now reaches speed smoothly, the load was the cause, and the fix is to wash such items in smaller batches. If the drum spins by hand without resistance when the washer is off and unplugged, but still throws F7E1 when empty, the load is not the cause, and the electrical and drive parts are next.
Our guide to Maytag washer vibration issues explains how an unlevel cabinet and worn suspension can make a spin rough, which sometimes accompanies this code.
When is it the belt, motor or control?
If the bolts are out and the load is light, the remaining causes need testing. A drive belt that has loosened or worn smooth slips and cannot bring the drum up to speed. A motor can fail internally or develop worn bearings. The motor control can lose its ability to drive the motor properly, and wiring between them can corrode. A technician separates these with a meter, checks the belt’s tension and condition and confirms what the speed signal is doing during the attempt. Replacing a motor without checking the belt and connectors first is a common way to spend more than the problem requires.
Owners should not open the washer’s cabinet to hunt for the cause; it contains line-voltage wiring and a heavy tub. For the full list of codes the washer can show, see our Maytag washer error codes reference.
Can you keep washing while it shows F7E1?
You can, in the sense that the washer will still fill and wash, but you cannot get a normal spin. Clothes will come out heavy with water, and that tempts people to run extra cycles. Instead, hand-wring only what you must, hang the rest and wait for the repair. A washer that tries and fails to spin repeatedly is working the motor hard for no benefit, and the strain on a worn belt can make a small repair larger. If the drum is full of water and will not spin, a drain-only cycle may be available, but check the control panel guide for your model before relying on it.
What should you do next?
If the bolts and load are ruled out and the code returns, stop running the washer, because repeated spin attempts stress the motor. We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer, and we will tell you if a repair is not worth doing on an older washer. Our Maytag washer repair service can test the speed sensor, belt and motor, and you can schedule a visit online.
