A failed Maytag washer control board is usually worth replacing on a washer that is otherwise sound, because the board is a single part and the drum, motor and pump are not affected by it. It is less clear-cut on a washer with other worn parts, such as noisy bearings or repeated breakdowns, where a second repair soon after is likely. Before you decide, rule out the cheap causes of a dead or erratic washer, and have a technician confirm that the board, and not the interface board, a wire or the power supply, is the part that failed.
What does the Maytag washer control board do?
The main control board is the washer’s central computer. It reads the settings you choose, watches the sensors, switches the water valves, the pump, the door lock and the motor on and off in order and reports errors on the display. Our Maytag washer control panel problems guide separates it from the user interface board behind the buttons, which registers presses and passes commands to the main board. They are two different parts, and a fault in one can look like a fault in the other.
That matters for the repair-or-replace question, because the right repair may be the smaller, interface board and not the main board.
What should you rule out before blaming the board?
Many dead washers are not board failures. Our control panel guide lists the quick checks in order: a tripped breaker, a GFCI outlet that has tripped, a damaged power cord and, on some front-loaders, a door that is not fully closed. A breaker that trips again straight away is a sign of a short in the washer or the house wiring, and you should not keep using the outlet until it has been inspected. If other appliances on the same circuit pull the voltage down, the board can behave erratically, and an electrician can tell you whether a dedicated circuit would help.
The guide also notes that a loose wiring harness can make a display flicker or show random characters, and that dirt and moisture around the panel can interfere with touch buttons. A technician can check these before deciding that the board has failed.
When is replacing the board worth it?
When the diagnosis is a confirmed board fault and the rest of the washer is sound: the drum turns quietly, there are no leaks and there is no history of repeated repairs. A board is a self-contained part, and fitting a new one restores the control without touching the drum, the motor or the plumbing. Ask for a written quote and compare it with the cost of a new washer. Our repair or replace washer guide frames the same decision for the whole machine, and our Maytag washer repair cost guide covers the money side in more detail.
Make sure the new board is the right one. Our control panel guide says boards are model-specific and are not interchangeable between series, so the part must be matched to your model and serial number.

When does replacing the washer make more sense?
When the board fault arrives with other problems. A washer that also rumbles in the spin, leaks, has had several repairs in a short time or needs a larger repair soon is a worse bet. A new board does not fix a worn bearing, a leaking tub or a failing motor. If the washer is old and one of these is present, add up the likely repairs rather than looking at the board alone. Our top-load versus front-load guide can help if you do decide to buy a new machine.
A technician can say whether the board looks like a one-off, for example after a power surge or moisture, or part of a pattern.
Can a board be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes a fault is not the board itself but a connector, a wire or the interface board. A loose harness can be reseated, and an interface board that has failed is a separate and smaller part. Beyond that, board repair at component level is not something we recommend for a washer, because replacing the board is normally more practical than tracing a fault on it. Ask the technician whether the fault could be a connector or the interface board before you agree to a new main board.
What should you not do yourself?
Do not remove the top or rear panel to look at the boards, and do not test them with a meter. The boards connect to the water valves, the door lock and the motor, so they sit next to mains power and, in a washer, next to water. If you smell burning, see smoke, or find water near an outlet, switch off the breaker at the panel while standing on a dry floor and never pull a plug from a wet outlet. Wipe the panel with a lightly damp cloth only and never spray cleaner directly on it.
When should you call a technician?
Call when the washer is dead after the quick checks, when the display is erratic or when buttons do not respond. Tell the technician your model and serial number and what the washer was doing. Our Maytag washer repair page explains how a visit works.
