Maytag cooktop terms such as Power Burner, DuraClean grates, Bridge Element, Temp Cook induction and Control Lock appear on spec sheets and in the manual, and they are easy to confuse with the codes the cooktop shows when something goes wrong. This glossary explains each term in plain language, tells you which Maytag cooktop families use it, and points out which displays are alerts and which are real faults. It covers the gas MGC, electric MEC and induction MCIT cooktops.
What is the Power Burner on a Maytag gas cooktop?
The Power Burner is the strongest burner on the cooktop, built for fast boiling and searing. On the MGC7536DS it is rated at 15,000 BTU, which is much more heat than a typical burner delivers and means a large pot of water comes to a boil far faster. The trade-off is that high output wants a clean burner. A clogged port on the Power Burner shows up as a weak or uneven flame, because the gas has fewer clear paths out. Our guide to cleaning and caring for a Maytag cooktop shows how to clear the ports safely.
What are DuraClean grates?
DuraClean is the name for the grate finish and design on Maytag gas cooktops that is meant to stand up to repeated cleaning and the movement of heavy pans. In practice it means you can wash the grates in the sink, dry them and put them back, and the surface should keep its look longer than a cheap coating. Care still matters: do not drop them, do not scrape them with metal tools and dry them fully so rust does not start in a chip.
What is a Bridge Element on a Maytag electric cooktop?
A Bridge Element is a heating zone that connects two neighboring radiant elements into one long oval, so you can heat a griddle, a roasting pan or a long skillet evenly. It is not a separate burner that works on its own. It borrows the elements on either side, and it only makes sense with cookware that spans the gap. If the bridge zone does not heat while the round elements do, the problem is usually the element or the switch for that zone, and our guide on cooktop burner will not light or heat explains how to narrow it down.

What is Temp Cook induction, and what does Power Boost do?
Temp Cook is the name for the induction cooking technology on the MCIT cooktops. Induction heats the pan itself with a magnetic field, so the glass stays much cooler than the cookware and the response is fast. Power Boost sends extra output to a zone for rapid heating. Because induction needs cookware that a magnet sticks to, the cooktop checks for a suitable pan before it heats. Our guide to how Maytag induction cooktops work goes through it in detail.
What does the U on an induction zone mean?
A flashing U with a power level means the zone does not detect a suitable pan. The usual causes are cookware that is not magnetic, a pan that is too small for the zone or a pan that sits off center. It is an alert, not a failure. Test the pan with a magnet, center it on the zone, and try again. If a pan that works on another zone is rejected here, then the zone itself needs a technician. The Maytag cooktop U page describes the display in full.
What do F4 and FC LF mean on a Maytag cooktop?
On electric and induction cooktops, F4 appears when a pan sits on or too close to the touch panel, or when the panel gets too hot. Move the pan away, let the panel cool and power-cycle the cooktop. If F4 comes back with nothing on the panel, the control needs to be tested. The Maytag cooktop F4 page covers it. An FC LF display, and its LR, RF and RR relatives, means a surface-element circuit is not responding, which points to the element, the relay or the control for that position. Do not keep running a zone that shows this, because a stuck relay can leave an element on.
What is Control Lock, and why do the buttons seem dead?
Control Lock disables the touch controls so a child or a stray touch cannot turn on a zone. If every button seems dead and a lock symbol shows, the lock is on. Press and hold the lock pad until the symbol goes away. Do not call for service until you have tried that. A lock that returns by itself usually means a hand, a cloth or a spill is resting on the panel, so wipe the glass dry and keep the area clear before you try again. If you are choosing between cooktop types, our gas versus electric versus induction guide compares them side by side.
We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer. If a zone will not heat, a burner will not light or a code keeps returning, our Maytag cooktop repair service can diagnose it, and you can book a visit online.
