LOC on a Maytag washer is not a fault. It is Control Lock, a deliberate feature that freezes the touch pads so a child, a cat or a leaning laundry basket cannot change a running cycle. The washer will finish what it was doing; it simply refuses new button presses until you unlock it. On most panels you clear it by pressing and holding the pad marked with a padlock, or the pad printed Control Lock underneath it, for about three seconds until the letters disappear. Nothing is broken, no part is involved, and a service visit for LOC alone is a wasted call.
What does the LOC code mean on a Maytag washer?
It means one thing only: the control panel has been locked. Maytag spells it LOC on some panels and LC on others, and both readings describe the same state. The washer is powered, the board is awake, the cycle logic is intact. What has changed is that the touch pads no longer accept input, so a press produces a beep and nothing else.

It appears in the same window that shows drain and motor faults, in the same style of lettering, often with the same beep. The difference is that every other code on that display describes something the machine detected; LOC describes something a person did.

How do I unlock a Maytag washer showing LOC?
Find the pad with the padlock icon. On top-load machines with a dial it is usually a small pad near the cycle selector, sometimes shared with another function and printed in smaller type below it. On front-load panels it sits in the row of option pads. Press and hold for roughly three seconds. The display clears, the washer beeps once, and the pads answer again.
Two details trip people up. The pad is often a shared pad, so a quick tap selects the printed function and only a long hold reaches the lock. And some panels want the hold while the washer is awake but idle, not mid-cycle, so tap Power first if the display has gone dark.
Why does my Maytag washer keep turning Control Lock back on?
Because something keeps holding the pad down. A locked panel that returns within seconds of being cleared is almost never a memory problem; it is a physical one. Detergent film, a drip of softener that dried on the membrane, or a swollen spot under the overlay can hold a pad in the pressed state, and a pad held for three seconds is exactly the gesture that arms Control Lock.
Wipe the panel with a barely damp cloth and dry it, then watch whether any pad lights or beeps on its own. The other cause is simply a second person in the house. Control Lock exists so that a child cannot restart a cycle, and households that turn it on deliberately forget that it stays on between loads.
Is LOC the same as lid, LdL or LdU?
No, and this is where a wasted afternoon usually begins. Four Maytag labels use the language of locking and they mean four different things. LOC locks the buttons. The other three are about the lid, which is a mechanical assembly with a latch, a strike and a motorized lock on top-load machines.
Read them apart like this. If the letters appear while the washer is idle and the lid opens normally, it is LOC. If the washer refuses to start and the display says lid, the machine is not seeing the lid as closed. If it says LdL, the lock tried to engage and could not. If it says LdU, the cycle is over but the lock never released, which is the only one of the four that can leave laundry trapped.

What if the lock pad does not clear the LOC code?
Work through three checks before assuming a part has failed. First, hold longer than feels natural, a full five seconds, because panels vary and a short hold registers as a tap. Second, try the hold on a washer that is idle rather than paused mid-cycle. Third, cut power at the breaker for a minute and try once more; a board that has latched an input will usually let go.
If the letters survive all three, the panel is no longer reading your finger correctly, and that is a console or membrane issue rather than a lock feature. At that point stop. A washer console sits directly above line voltage connections, and the lid-lock harness runs beside them. Do not open the top panel to chase a locked display.

When should a technician look at it?
Call when the lock will not clear after a hold, a reset and a clean panel; when pads act on their own; or when the display says LdU and the lid is still shut on a finished load. A lid that will not release is the one case here that is worth same-day attention, because the laundry inside is wet and the lock is a small part with a short visit attached.
