TL;DR: A Maytag refrigerator ice dispenser is a chain: water line and filter, an ice maker module in the freezer, and an auger and chute in the door. Find which link failed by what comes out: crushed, hollow, lumpy or nothing.

A Maytag refrigerator ice dispenser is really three systems working in a chain: a water line with a filter and a valve, an ice maker module in the freezer that freezes and harvests the cubes, and a dispenser in the door that moves ice or water into your glass. When you know the order, it is much easier to tell which link has failed, because each link fails in its own way. This guide follows the path from the wall to the glass on side-by-side and French-door models such as the MSS25C4MGZ and the MFI2570FEW.

Water pathSupply valve, filter, inlet valve, fill tube and dispenser line
Ice makerFills a mold, freezes, then ejects cubes into the bin
Ice level controlAn arm or sensor that stops the maker when the bin is full
DispenserPaddle or pad, switch, chute door and a crusher for crushed ice
Common faultsOld filter, frozen fill tube, weak inlet valve, stuck module, jammed chute

How does water get to the Maytag ice and water dispenser?

Water enters through a small supply line connected to the cold water pipe, passes through the water filter and then reaches an electric inlet valve at the back of the refrigerator. The inlet valve is a solenoid with two outlets: one feeds the ice maker fill tube, and one feeds the dispenser line that runs to the door. When the control needs water for ice, it opens the ice maker side briefly. When you press the water pad, it opens the dispenser side while you hold it.

This is why a clogged filter shows up in both places at once. If the water flow is weak at the glass and the ice is small or hollow, the filter or the supply line is the first suspect. The Maytag water filter replacement guide shows how to change it.

How does the ice maker make and release ice?

The ice maker module sits in the freezer. It fills a small mold with a measured amount of water, the freezer air chills it into cubes and a thermostat or sensor tells the module when the cubes are hard. Then a small heater warms the mold slightly to loosen them, an ejector sweeps the cubes out of the mold, and they fall into the bin below. The cycle repeats until the bin is full.

The ice level control is what ends the repeats. Depending on the model it is an arm that the rising pile of ice lifts, or an optical sensor that the ice blocks. When it signals a full bin, the module stops. If the arm is stuck up, or the sensor window is fogged or blocked by frost, the maker thinks the bin is full and makes nothing, even though the bin is empty.

How does the dispenser get ice into the glass?

When you press the paddle or pad, a switch closes and powers a small motor, called an auger, in the ice bin. The auger turns and pushes cubes forward to a chute opening, and a solenoid opens a door in the chute so the ice can fall out. When you release the paddle, the door closes. If you chose crushed ice, a diverter sends the cubes past a set of blades first, driven by a motor, so you get crushed ice instead of whole cubes.

A dispenser that hums but delivers nothing often has a jammed bin, where cubes have fused into a lump that the auger cannot move. A dispenser that does nothing at all points to the switch, the control or the chute door. A dispenser that only gives crushed ice, even when you choose cubes, points to the cube-and-crush selector.

Why does the ice sometimes come out crushed, hollow or in a lump?

Each symptom points at a different link. Crushed ice when you chose cubes usually means the selector or the diverter is stuck on the crush side, which is a technician job. Hollow or tiny cubes mean the mold is not getting enough water, so look at the filter, the fill tube and the water pressure. A lump of fused ice usually follows a stretch of slow or leaking water, or a long time when the freezer door was open. Break the lump up with a plastic tool, empty the bin and let the maker restart, but do not use anything sharp, since the auger and the bin walls scratch and crack easily.

What should you never do to the ice maker?

Do not poke a screwdriver or a paper clip into the module or the dispenser chute, because the module carries power and the chute has moving parts behind it. Do not pour hot water into the bin, since the plastic parts warp. Do not force the dispenser flap open by hand. If the module needs a test, a technician runs the manufacturer’s test mode safely rather than shorting terminals.

How do these parts connect to the rest of the refrigerator?

The ice maker lives in the freezer and shares its cold air, so a freezer that drifts warm makes slow, soft or fused ice regardless of the module. Check the freezer temperature first, and read our Maytag refrigerator not cooling guide if both compartments are warm. For the ice maker’s own faults, the ice maker not making ice guide and the ice maker problems guide go through the causes step by step. We are an independent repair company, not the manufacturer. If the dispenser will not deliver, the maker makes only crushed ice or water is leaking near the door, our Maytag refrigerator repair service can trace the fault link by link, and you can book a visit online.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my Maytag ice maker only make crushed ice?
The selector or diverter that chooses between cubes and crushed ice may be stuck on the crush side. A technician can test the selector and its solenoid.
What does the ice level bar do on a Maytag refrigerator?
It senses when the bin is full and tells the ice maker to stop. If it is stuck or blocked by frost, the maker may stop early or never start.
Why is the water dispenser slow but the ice maker still works?
A clogged filter or a kinked dispenser line usually slows the glass fill, because the dispenser line is longer and more restricted than the ice maker fill line. Replace the filter first.
Is it safe to try to fix the ice maker myself?
Cleaning the bin and replacing the filter are safe. Anything inside the module carries power, so schedule a repair visit for module, valve or selector problems.
