Maytag BrightSeries is the name our model pages use for the LED interior lighting on Maytag refrigerators. It appears in the feature list of French-door, side-by-side, top-freezer and counter-depth models, always as “BrightSeries LED lighting”, and it is a lighting feature only: it does not cool, filter or sense anything. In general, LED lighting in a refrigerator means light-emitting diodes that give even light and produce little heat. What yours does exactly, and how a light is serviced on your model, is in your owner’s manual.
What is Maytag BrightSeries lighting?
The name appears on 11 of our Maytag refrigerator model pages, in the list of what the model offers “depending on configuration”. On the MFI2570FEZ French-door model, for example, the list reads PowerCold rapid chill-down, FreshLock humidity-controlled crispers, the FreshFlow air filter, BrightSeries LED lighting and a Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish. The same wording is on the MSS25C4MGZ side-by-side, the MRT311FFFZ top-freezer and the MSC21C6MFZ counter-depth model.
Our pages do not describe the lights themselves, such as how many there are or where they sit, so we will not. Where and how many differ by model, and your owner’s manual or the spec sheet for your refrigerator is the source for both.
What does LED lighting mean in a refrigerator?
LED stands for light-emitting diode. An LED is a small electronic light source, and it differs from the old incandescent bulb in two ways that matter in a refrigerator: it makes very little heat and it uses very little power. A bulb that makes heat inside a cold cabinet adds a small load to the cooling system, so LED lighting is a sensible fit. LEDs are also usually mounted as strips or small modules that light a shelf evenly, instead of a single bulb that leaves dark corners. That is the idea behind a lighting feature name: better visibility into the cabinet. What BrightSeries gives on your exact model, see the manual.
How is BrightSeries different from the other Maytag feature names?
Maytag refrigerator pages list several branded terms side by side, and each means something different. PowerCold is rapid chill-down, and our PowerCold guide explains it. FreshLock is humidity-controlled crispers, covered in our FreshLock crisper tips. FreshFlow is the air filter. BrightSeries is the lighting. The terms are listed together because they sit in the same sentence of a model description, not because they work together. A fresh filter does not change the light and a bright light does not help the food stay cold.

Why would the refrigerator light stop working?
Start with the simple causes. First, check that the refrigerator has power: if the display, the fan and the compressor are all silent, the light is not the problem, and our Maytag refrigerator no power guide covers that. Second, a light controlled by the door only comes on when the door opens, so a door that does not open and close properly, or a dirty or stuck door switch area, may keep it off. Third, the light module itself can fail. LED lighting rarely needs service, but it can fail like any electronic part.
A single dark light on an otherwise cold, working refrigerator does not affect how it keeps food. If the light is out and the refrigerator is also warm, that is a separate problem; start with Maytag refrigerator not cooling.
Can you replace the light yourself?
Only if your manual shows how and says it is meant for an owner. Some LED lights are a small module that clips out, and others are part of a sealed assembly. We do not know which you have, and we will not guess. Never pry at a light cover, never take apart a housing and never work on the wiring while the refrigerator is plugged in. If your manual describes a replaceable light, follow it exactly, unplug the refrigerator first and handle the part by its edges. If it does not, call a technician.
Water and electricity are a poor mix. If a light housing is wet, or you see water near an outlet, switch off the breaker at the panel while standing on a dry floor and never pull a plug from a wet outlet.
How can you get the most from interior lighting?
Keep the shelves loosely arranged so the light reaches the back of the cabinet, and wipe the shelves and the light cover with a soft damp cloth, never spraying cleaner at the light. Our Maytag refrigerator organization tips explain how to arrange food so air and light both reach everything. A well-lit, uncluttered cabinet makes it easier to see spoiled food, which is the best way to keep a refrigerator smelling fresh.
When should you call a technician?
Call if the lights are out and the refrigerator is not cooling, if the light flickers, buzzes or is hot to the touch, or if the manual does not describe an owner replacement. Tell the technician the model number from the label inside the cabinet. Our Maytag refrigerator repair page explains how a visit works.
