Maytag FreshFlow is the name of the air filter that our model pages list on Maytag French-door refrigerators such as the MFI2570FEZ and MFI2570FEW. It is a filter for the air inside the refrigerator, not a water filter, and it is a separate item from the BrightSeries lighting listed beside it. Where it sits and when to replace it differ by model, so the owner’s manual for your refrigerator is the source for both.

What is the Maytag FreshFlow air filter?

The MFI2570FEZ model page describes a 36-inch French-door refrigerator of about 25 cubic feet and lists, depending on configuration, PowerCold rapid chill-down, FreshLock humidity-controlled crispers, the FreshFlow air filter, BrightSeries LED lighting and a Fingerprint Resistant Stainless Steel finish. The MFI2570FEW page lists the same set in white. So when a Maytag spec list says FreshFlow, it means the air filter inside the refrigerator. It is one of several “branded” terms in that list, and each of the others means something different.

The same wording appears on our pages for top-freezer models such as the MRT311FFFZ and side-by-side models such as the MSS25C4MGZ, so FreshFlow is a feature name used across several Maytag refrigerator styles, not a single model. In general, a refrigerator air filter is a replaceable element meant to reduce odors that circulate in the cabinet; what it does on your exact model, see the owner’s manual. We do not describe the inside of the part, and we do not guess. What we can say is where the term belongs and how not to mix it up with the parts it gets confused with.

How is FreshFlow different from the water filter?

Refrigerators with a dispenser carry two kinds of filter, and owners often swap the words. The water filter is a cartridge that treats water for the dispenser and the ice maker. A water filter is a cartridge, and its location and change schedule are in your owner’s manual. The FreshFlow filter treats air, not water. Changing one does nothing for the other. If your question is about taste or dispenser flow, see how to replace a Maytag refrigerator water filter.

The reverse is true as well: a refrigerator odor is not fixed by a new water cartridge. First find the source, such as spoiled food, a spill or a dirty drain pan, then ask what the air filter has to do with it.

What is BrightSeries, and is it a filter too?

No. BrightSeries is listed on the same pages as the lighting: “BrightSeries LED lighting”. It sits in the same sentence as FreshFlow, which is why the two are searched together, but it has nothing to do with the air. If the light in a refrigerator goes out, the bulb or the light circuit is the place to look, not the filter. The light is a convenience feature that rarely needs service, and it does not affect how the refrigerator cools.

How do FreshFlow, PowerCold and FreshLock fit together?

Think of three jobs. PowerCold is about speed: our PowerCold guide explains how rapid chill-down works and when it hides a fault. FreshLock is about produce: humidity-controlled crispers, covered in our FreshLock crisper tips. FreshFlow is the air filter, and our pages do not say more than that. None of them replaces the others. A refrigerator that cools well and has clean air can still bruise lettuce in a drawer that was set to the wrong humidity, and a good crisper does not clean the air.

When you compare models, check which of these are listed for the exact variant. The model pages say “depending on configuration”, and the MFI2570FEW buying guide adds that features can vary within the same digit block, so read your own nameplate rather than relying on a listing title.

One practical habit helps with all of them: keep the shelves loosely packed. A refrigerator that is crammed full blocks the vents and the crisper doors, and no filter or lighting feature can make up for food stacked against the back wall. Wipe up spills when they happen, check the door gasket for a clean, tight seal and leave a little space around containers so air has a path to move through the compartment.

When should a FreshFlow filter be changed?

We do not publish a number, because our pages do not carry one and the answer depends on the model. Check the owner’s manual for your refrigerator for the schedule and for the part to order, and use the full model and serial number when you buy a replacement. Do not assume a filter from a different Maytag model will fit. If your refrigerator has a filter status light, the manual explains what it means and how to reset it.

For routine care, our annual Maytag refrigerator maintenance guide covers the cleaning that keeps a refrigerator fresh, and our organization tips show how to arrange food so air can move.

What problems are not a filter problem?

People blame the filter for several symptoms that come from other parts. Noisy operation, a door that does not seal, water leaking, a refrigerator that runs constantly, a dispenser that does not work and frost or ice buildup are all common refrigerator calls, and none of them is a sign of a tired air filter. Warm food, frost or a refrigerator that never stops running need a diagnosis, not a new filter. If the refrigerator is not cooling, start with our Maytag refrigerator not cooling guide, and do not open any panel yourself.

Frequently asked questions
What is the FreshFlow air filter on a Maytag refrigerator?
It is the air filter listed, depending on configuration, on Maytag French-door models such as the MFI2570FEZ and MFI2570FEW. For how it works and how to change it, see your owner’s manual.
Is FreshFlow the same as the water filter?
No. The water filter is a separate cartridge for the dispenser and ice. FreshFlow treats air, so replacing one does not affect the other.
What is BrightSeries on a Maytag refrigerator?
It is the LED lighting listed beside FreshFlow on our model pages. It is a lighting feature and not a filter.
How often do I change the FreshFlow filter?
Our pages do not state an interval. Follow the schedule in your owner’s manual for your model, and use your full model number when ordering.
My refrigerator smells; is the filter the cause?
Check for spoiled food, spills and a dirty drain pan first. If the odor stays or the refrigerator is not cooling, book a visit or call 844-938-3634.
