The Maytag MDB4949SKZ is a front-control dishwasher. Our model page lists it with Dual Power Filtration and the PowerBlast cycle and rates it at about 50 dBA, and, depending on configuration, with PowerDry and a 3rd Level Rack. It is the model to look at if you want a heavy-duty cycle and a two-part filter, you are happy with the buttons on the front of the door and a moderate noise rating is acceptable. Confirm the details on the nameplate of the exact unit before you buy.
What kind of dishwasher is the Maytag MDB4949SKZ?
The MDB4949SKZ model page describes a front-control dishwasher with Dual Power Filtration and the PowerBlast cycle, rated about 50 dBA. “Front control” means the buttons sit on the face of the door, where you can see and press them with the door closed, unlike a top-control dishwasher, whose buttons are hidden on the top edge of the door until you open it. If you prefer to check what a cycle is doing at a glance, front controls are easier to read. If you want a clean, uncluttered door, you may prefer top controls, such as the MDTS7024SZ.
We are an independent service company, not the manufacturer, so we describe the model from our own pages and from what we are asked to repair. For details such as tub material, cycle list or rack dimensions, use the nameplate and Maytag’s own documentation.
What do Dual Power Filtration and PowerBlast mean?
Our Maytag PowerBlast glossary explains both terms. PowerBlast is the heavy-duty wash cycle for pots, pans and baking dishes with food that has dried on; it usually runs longer and uses more hot water, so use it for loads that need it. Dual Power Filtration is the two-part filter system that keeps food particles out of the wash water. In practice the filters need regular cleaning, since a dirty filter is a common reason for a dishwasher that smells, cleans poorly or drains slowly. Our Maytag dishwasher filter cleaning guide shows how.
Neither term is a promise about results with every load. A good wash depends on loading, detergent, hot water at the machine and a clean filter and spray arms.

How loud is about 50 dBA?
Noise is the one number our model page gives for the MDB4949SKZ, and it is about 50 dBA. For comparison, our model pages list about 47 dBA for the MDB8959SKZ. A higher number is louder, so the MDB4949SKZ is a little noisier than that model. Whether that matters depends on your kitchen. In a closed kitchen it may never bother you, and in an open plan home where the dishwasher runs in the evening, it is worth listening to one in a showroom if you can. Our Maytag dishwasher series comparison discusses noise across the lines.
Installation affects noise as well. A dishwasher that is level and snug in its cabinet, with the hoses not rattling against the wall, sounds quieter than one that is not.
What about drying and the third rack?
Our model page lists PowerDry and a 3rd Level Rack as options depending on configuration, so check the nameplate and the listing you are buying from. PowerDry is the name of the drying system that runs after the final rinse. Plastic and nonstick items dry less well than glass and ceramic on any dishwasher, so do not judge a machine by a plastic container, and use rinse aid if your manual recommends it. The 3rd Level Rack is the shallow tray above the top rack for flatware and small tools. It frees the lower racks for plates and pots, provided you load it so that nothing blocks the arm above.
If a third rack matters to you, confirm that the exact unit you are buying has one, since not every configuration lists it.
What should you check before you buy?
- The nameplate: confirm the full model number and the listed features.
- The opening: our Maytag dishwasher installation requirements say standard Maytag dishwashers need a 24-inch wide opening; check your model’s manual for the rest.
- The connections: a hot water supply with a shutoff valve, a drain and an outlet, as the installation guide lists.
- The controls: front or top, and whether you like to see the status with the door closed.
- The noise: about 50 dBA, per our model page, against what your kitchen can tolerate.
Measure the opening yourself. Do not rely on the old dishwasher’s size.
What does the model need after you buy it?
The same care as any dishwasher. Clean the filter regularly, keep the spray arms clear, use dishwasher detergent and not hand dish soap, and leave the door gasket clean. Our spray arm maintenance guide explains what to check. Do not run the dishwasher if it leaks, and do not take off the lower panel or the door’s inner panel. A professional installation is sensible if the water or electrical connection is new.
When should you call a technician?
Call if a new dishwasher leaks, will not drain, will not start or shows flashing lights you do not understand. Our Maytag dishwasher flashing light codes guide is the place to start for a code. If you see water near an outlet, switch off the breaker at the panel while standing on a dry floor and never pull a plug from a wet outlet. Our Maytag dishwasher repair page explains how a visit works.
